What are the causes, solutions and effect of this problem.
Sample Answer
Deforestation is a severe issue because the world’s forests are rapidly disappearing. This essay will explore some attributive factors associated with this trend, discuss the far-reaching consequences it can have on the earth, and come up with some feasible solutions. This issue is primarily due to the fact that these days the value of timber is going very high. Everybody likes to decorate their houses with the costliest wood possible to show off their luxury. For example, a person named XYZ in the USA brought a dining table worth 10000 USD which is not necessary. This issue appears to have a wide range of potential consequences. There is an increase in the greenhouse gases, melting of the ice glaciers, disturbance caused to the food chain in the ecosystem. Consequently, men and animals have been suffering a lot than ever before. For instance, the Global sea level has risen by about 8 inches. If it continues, a huge number of people will become homeless. There seems to be a variety of possible answers to address this issue. Planting more trees may be the best way forward to tackle this issue. The school and colleges should encourage the young ones to plant them in their neighborhood. The reason behind this is that according to ABC stats, there are only 100 plants being planted for every 1000 trees chopped off. The future generation should take care of it and try to maintain ecological balance. Otherwise, they will be in for some hard time ahead. In conclusion, people are felling trees because wood is getting more valuable for many reasons. In turn, the environment of the earth and the whole ecosystem is being disrupted. Students should be encouraged to plant trees in their neighborhoods by their schools and institutions.

Question:

Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are continuing to rise at alarming rates.

What problems are associated with this and what are some possible solutions.

Sample Answer:

Climate change is among the principal dangers facing people this century and ocean levels are increasing dramatically. This essay will explore some key issues associated with this trend and come up with some feasible solutions.

The most severe problem is this: sea levels creeping up is the flooding of peoples’ residences. Millions of people all over the world live in coastal areas and if the sea rises by even a few feet, they will be inundated with water and lose their property. The shelter is one of the most basic of human needs and widespread flooding would cause millions of people to become homeless, not to mention losing all of their possessions. The devastation brought about by this was clear for all to see during the 2011 Tsunami in Japan, in which millions of people were displaced.

On the other hand, there seems to be a variety of possible answers to address this issue. building flood barriers may be the best way forward to tackle this issue. Flood defences, such as dikes, dams and floodgates, could be built along coasts and waterways, thereby stopping the water reaching populated areas. Netherlands is one of the most populated areas in the world and also one of the most vulnerable to flooding and they have successfully employed various flood defence systems.

In conclusion, stemming the rising tides caused by increasing global temperatures is one of the foremost challenges we face and it will ultimately lead to many of the worlds’ cities being left underwater, but a possible solution could be to utilise the flood prevention techniques already used by countries like Holland.

Question

Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary school.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample Answer

Some authorities think that it is more favourable for pupils to begin studying languages at primary school instead of secondary school. Although confusion with their native tongue can be a problem, I believe the upside of this situation far outweigh the downside since the earlier someone learns an additional language the more likely they are to master it.

This trend appears to be significantly more advantageous for two reasons. The most substantial favourable aspect of this is that children are more likely to gain fluency in adulthood as a result of this. That is to say that they will have far more years to perfect their skills and it will seem perfectly normal to speak bilingually. For example, in countries such as Holland and Norway where English is taught from a very young age, more than 95% of adults speak it at an advanced level.

But there is another additional worthwhile benefit of this trend, which is that learning a second language also helps to improve overall cognitive abilities. In other words, it benefits the overall development of a child’s brain. A recent survey by Cambridge University found that children who studied a new language before the age of 5 were significantly more likely to score higher in Mathematics and Science.

On the other hand, those who oppose to this say that it causes the child to become confused between their mother tongue and the other language. However, there is actually no evidence to support this view and children from bilingual families do just as well in both languages. My son was brought up speaking both Vietnamese and English and outperforms most of his classmates in both.

In conclusion, early foreign language learning impairs uptake of native languages seems to be a flawed argument; in contrast, it leads to higher fluency and improved brain function clearly. It is, therefore, to say that it has had more significant benefits than the drawbacks.

Information technology is becoming a ubiquitous part of learning. This essay will examine some benefits that this trend may bring and also some drawbacks that must be taken into account. Then, I will explain why the advantages are more relevant.

The most substantial favourable aspect of this is that computers bring to learners is easy access to vast amounts of resources. Learners were once limited to the books they had and the knowledge of their teacher, now they can learn about anything they choose at the touch of a button. Google is a prime example, because it allows people to easily search for whatever they are looking for quickly and accurately.

On the other hand, some downsides could also be considered regarding this trend. One possible drawback is that using the internet to complete academic work can sometimes lead to pupils copying articles from the internet. As a result, students do not have to think about their tasks and learn very little. The Sunday Times recently reported that 72% of college graduates in the UK admitted to copying and pasting Wikipedia articles at least once.

Overall, it is a very positive development because most students will take advantage of the power of the information superhighway to enhance their studies, rather than using it to cheat. For example, in 2005 Cambridge University found that students who regularly used a computer were 26% more likely to get a first-class degree than those who did not.

In conclusion, the web has provided a gateway to knowledge unlike anything seen before and although it can sometimes lead to a few taking the easy route and plagiarising, it is a very positive step in the evolution of education.

Question:
In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decided to do this.

Sample Answer

Before embarking on college many young people are advised that a year working or travelling may be a good option. This essay will examine some benefits that this trend may bring and also some drawbacks that must be taken into account.

The most substantial favourable aspect of this is that third level education is very expensive and lots of students decide to work for 12 months and save up money before they begin their studies. This allows them to pay for their living costs, tuition fees and accommodation and focus on their studies, rather than struggle financially or have to get a part-time job on top of their academic work. The Times recently reported that the average student at a UK university requires over $12,000 per annum just to survive and many drop out because they cannot afford to stay.

On the other hand, some downsides could also be considered regarding this trend. Many students often get used to working or travelling and don’t want to return to a life of study after a year off. This short term view can cause some to bypass university altogether and go straight into a job that is beneath their capabilities or may not offer the same prospects their future career might have done. For instance, a recent survey by the British Government found that 26% of students who take a gap-year never enter tertiary education.

In conclusion, taking a break from studies can be advantageous if it allows people to gather up savings, however, they should also be careful that it does not lead to disillusionment with education altogether.

Question:
Fossil fuels are essential for producing electricity, powering industry, and fueling transportation. However, one day we will reach a point when all the world’s fossil fuels have been depleted.
How can we conserve these resources?
What are some alternatives to fossil fuels?

Sample Answer:

The world is currently reliant on oil, coal, and natural gas for the majority of its energy requirements but there will come a time when these run out. This essay will explore how we can help to prevent our non-renewable resources from becoming depleted by using our cars less frequently and it will name some natural forces that can be harnessed to generate power.

Conserving energy is a responsibility of every individual and an important way in which we can all do our bit is to use more energy-efficient means of transport. The easiest way to do this is to leave the car at home and walk or cycle to our destination if it isn’t too far away, or take public transport for longer journeys. Another way to reduce our fuel consumption is to car share. Whenever my friends and I get together for coffee, we agree to meet up at a café that we can each get to without having to drive our cars there. We usually go on foot or ride our bikes. If everyone made small decisions like this, it would make a real difference.

The most sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels are the generation of power from natural forces such as the sun, wind, and oceans. Solar and wind power are already widely used across the world but it is wave power and tidal energy that have the greatest untapped potential to provide for our energy needs in the future. A report recently commissioned in the United Kingdom estimates that tidal energy could meet as much as 20% of the UK’s current electricity demands once the technology being developed is operational. Wave energy converters are expected to prove equally successful in the long term.

In conclusion, our earth’s reserves of fossil fuels will not last forever and we need to be continually developing new technologies to enable us to produce energy from renewable sources such as the sun, wind, and water. In the meantime, we can help to slow the rate of depletion by leaving the car at home and using more energy-efficient forms of transport whenever possible.
